Benvenuti a Reggio Emilia, cuore della pianura padana italiana e patria della bandiera tricolore. Una “città
di campagna” diventata green-city (è in cima
alle classifiche della raccolta differenziata e delle energie alternative), che accoglie i suoi visitatori con ben
tre opere di Santiago Calatrava: il casello autostradale futuribile, un candido ponte monumentale a forma
di arpa e una stazione dell’Alta velocità plissettata come un origami. Quest’ultima, la cosiddetta Mediopadana, molto criticata ultimamente. A un anno dall’inaugurazione è più una fermata che una stazione, una magnifica cattedrale nel deserto carente
di collegamenti rapidi con i centri vicini, e ancora priva di quelle attività commerciali previste nei suoi 200 metri di galleria. Il tempo provvederà, ma intanto l’architettura del maestro catalano funziona benissimo come “zampata” contemporanea di questa cittadina che,
con la sua dimensione modesta (170 mila abitanti), potrebbe facilmente passare inosservata. Ed è invece tra i laboratori urbani più vivaci della Penisola, persino
Welcome to Reggio Emilia, which lies at the heart of the Italian Po Valley and was the city which historically gave birth to the Italian flag. This “countryside-city” which has become a green city (it is top of all tables in terms of recycling and alternative energy use) welcomes
its visitors with three works by Santiago Calatrava:
a futuristic motorway toll booth, a gleaming white monumental bridge in the form of a harp and a high speed railway station which appears folded like an origami creation. This last place, which is known as the Mediopadana, has come in for an enormous amount of criticism in recent times. It has been a year since it was opened and it appears more like a stopping place than a real service centre, a magnificent cathedral in the desert which is lacking in swift links with nearby urban centres, and is still without commercial activities which were planned for its 200 metres of galleries. Only time will tell if this is going to be a success, but in the meantime the architecture of the Catalan master works perfectly as a “contemporary” sign of this city which, given its modest
